Smart Thermostat Program

Participate in RPU’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program! With your smart thermostat, you can help to reduce peak electric demand during Peak Savings Events.

When you enroll in BYOD, you’ll receive a one-time $50 enrollment incentive bill credit plus a $25 annual, year-end bill credit for participating.

How does BYOD work?

Participants consent to brief, limited Peak Savings Events during which thermostat settings may be adjusted during periods of peak electric demand between May 1 and September 30. These events typically occur on very hot days but may also be initiated under other conditions to reduce strain on the electrical grid. Peak Savings Events will not occur on weekends or holidays.

How does BYOD benefit Rochester’s community?

  • Participation enables RPU to utilize advanced technologies that help manage energy demand during peak usage periods.
  • The program reduces peak demand, alleviating stress on the electrical grid during periods of high usage.
  • Reduced peak demand can lower overall energy costs, with savings passed on to RPU customers.

How do I enroll in BYOD?

To be eligible to enroll, you must answer YES to the following questions:

  • Are you an RPU residential electric customer?
  • Do you use your thermostat(s) to control your central air conditioning or heat pump?
  • Have you installed a qualifying internet-connected thermostat(s)? Visit the BYOD Qualifying Thermostats page to see a full list.

If you answered YES to all the questions, visit the Bring Your Own Device program and follow the series of simple steps. Once your eligibility is confirmed by RPU, you will be enrolled in the program. You will receive notification on your eligibility status in your email.
