RPU prepared for high winds and winter weather this weekend

Rochester, Minn. (Thursday, Mar. 12) — Rochester Public Utilities (RPU) is prepared for expected high winds in the Rochester area tonight and the potential for additional winter weather this weekend. RPU crews are on call and ready to respond if outages occur, power lines are brought down, or other electric service issues arise.

Line crews and response teams are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can be dispatched as needed to assess damage and restore service safely and efficiently. Weather conditions such as strong winds, snow, and ice can sometimes lead to tree damage, power outages, or downed power lines.

As weather conditions develop, RPU reminds the public to use extreme caution around downed power lines. Important safety reminders include:

• Never approach or touch a downed power line or cable.
• Stay at least 50 feet away from any downed line and report it to RPU at 507-280-1500 during business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or 507-280-9191 after hours.
• A downed line may still be energized even if it is not sparking or arcing.
• Electricity can travel through trees or branches that are touching a downed line.
• If a power line falls on your vehicle, remain inside the vehicle, keep others away, and call 911 immediately.

Residents can report downed power lines or electrical hazards directly to RPU so crews can respond safely and efficiently.
