Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and RPU are currently working together to protect Rochester's wells through a program called "wellhead protection." The goal of this program is to prevent pollution of the public water supply. Wellhead protection is a way to prevent drinking water from becoming polluted by managing possible sources of contamination in the area that supplies water to a public well. Wells are most vulnerable to contamination, which occurs within a short distance (a few miles or less) of the well. RPU identifies these areas as the Drinking Water Supply Management Area (DWSMA) using groundwater modeling. The speed at which groundwater moves through the ground depends on how much the well is pumped and what type of soil, rock particles or bedrock it is moving through.
