RPU offers a wind power program for its
customers, both residential and business.
Customer interest in renewable energy and
our association with Southern Minnesota Municipal
Power Agency (SMMPA), our wholesale provider,
now allows you the opportunity to capture
the power of the wind.
Feedback Question (Links Newsletter
Summer 07 Edition): Should RPU construct
two local wind turbines as part of a local energy
education/research facility? Or should RPU devote
its resources to a larger wind farm that is
not local? The pro’s and con’s:
Local….you would be able to see
the turbines, it would help serve local renewable
energy education needs, according to research
a locally installed wind turbine has a greater
economic impact than a non-local corporately-owned
wind farm.
Non-local… less maintenance costs,
perhaps greater output due to more favorable
wind strength, and perhaps tax advantages.

Electricity generated by wind power offers
significant environmental benefits. In fact,
supporting 100 kilowatt-hours of wind power
each month for 12 months has the environmental
benefit of planting 1/2-acre of trees or not
driving a car 2,400 miles. The average household
in our area uses about 600 kWh a month. You
can support wind power for a small additional
charge on your RPU bill. In fact, you can
support an unlimited number of kWh, which
allows you to tailor your investment in wind
power.

The Time Is Right For Wind Power
With a wind resource right here in Minnesota,
producing electricity with wind for a reasonable
cost has become a reality, and it makes a
lot of sense. The biggest advantage of wind
power is that it is renewable and produces
no emissions or byproducts. Wind power is
the fastest growing energy source today.
Right now, we are buying wind power from two
950 kW turbines located near Fairmont, MN
which is in southeastern Minnesota. Fairmont
has a great wind resource. These two turbines
will each provide 950 kW of electricity. The
two turbines together will produce enough
energy to power approximately 700 homes.
