A hundred years ago electric equipment was simpler. Small spikes that lasted for a fraction of a second did not affect motors and incandescent lights. Now, power quality problems cause damage to equipment and loss of computer data.
A modern computer, at the chip level, cannot tolerate a fraction of those spikes. Computers are sensitive to spikes that last less than one thousandth of a second. Many motor drives and lights now have controls that switch thousands of times per second. This allows them to run more efficiently but also makes them more sensitive. The cost can be very high of lost data and production shutdowns due to failure of essential equipment.
You can reduce the costs associated with power quality problems by installing uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) on your computers. A system-wide solution is required to avoid damage to motor drives and sensitive electronic equipment.
