As temperatures rise during the summer, there
is more demand for electricity to run air conditioners
and other equipment. This increased demand creates
peak energy periods because generating plants
are producing at, or near, full capacity. When
this happens, RPU may need to purchase expensive
electricity from the wholesale market, which
could mean higher energy bills – for everyone.
In fact, you could see an increase in your electric
bill – putting a strain not only on your
budget, but also on RPU’s generating capacity.
To combat these rising demands, RPU has created
an energy load management program called BUSINESS
PARTNERS. BUSINESS PARTNERS helps you save money
and energy during periods of peak electric usage
by automatically cycling air conditioners (A/C),
electric water heaters, or other large loads.
How RPU BUSINESS PARTNERS Works
After installing a remote-controlled
switch near your air-conditioner or water heater,
RPU will cycle operation during peak energy
periods by sending a signal from a computer
at the RPU Service Center. When the switch receives
the signal, it cycles your A/C compressor and/or
electric water heater elements for set periods
of time. These cycle times can occur 1) on peak
energy days and 2) between one and 22 times
a day, which is pre-determined by you and RPU.
The best part of BUSINESS PARTNERS is most customers
don't even realize that their A/C compressor
or water heater is being cycled off! Most water
heaters can provide hot water for up to four
hours of moderate use after the power has been
turned off, and the fan on your A/C will continue
to operate, blowing already cooled air through
your building.
The cost of BUSINESS PARTNERS is small
. . .
The switch is easily installed at little or
no cost to you. For small air conditioners and
water heaters there is no charge at all. For
larger, more complex equipment you may find
some minor costs are incurred when consultation
with RPU electricians is needed to best determine
installation. Switch installation is scheduled
at your convenience, completed by a local, licensed
electrical contractor, and carefully inspected
by a City Electrical Inspector.
. . . but the savings and benefits are
large!
By slowing the demand, RPU can hold
the line on electric rates and even defer construction
of new generating plants – practicing
not only fiscal responsibility, but environmental
responsibility as well.
Becoming a BUSINESS PARTNER:
can save in energy costs.
reduces upward pressure on electric
rates.
defers the need for additional power
plants.
conserves our natural resources.
