Why Does Rochester Need A Boulevard Tree Project?

Since hundreds of the city's trees die each year and many new developments do not have street-side trees, action is needed! NeighborWoods Rochester is a partnership between public and private organizations to better our urban forest, in particular our boulevard trees. (A boulevard tree is one that lies on the right-of-way of a city street.)

The following organizations have partnered to create a street tree inventory, develop a citizen training program to teach the proper planting and care for trees, and to plant trees in the boulevards of Rochester's streets:

• Rochester Public Utilities
NeighborWoods in Rochester
Rochester Park and Recreation Department
Committee of Urban Design and Environment
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources

Pictures below are from the 2006 boulevard tree planting event held on Saturday, October 21. Over 200 trees were planted at 3 boulevard locations in Rochester. RPU was a major financial contributor of the event.

How You Can Help

Become a Citizen Forester

Every forest needs someone to watch over and care for it, to make sure that the trees and habitat are healthy and well planned.

Rochester’s urban forest needs you to consider being a Citizen Forester for your neighborhood. Contact your neighborhood association president about forming a Citizen Forester team.

Responsibilities include:

•Register to be trained as a Citizen Forester at rene@rneighbors.org
•Advocate for healthy boulevard trees

If you are interested in becoming a Citizen Forester contact NeighborWoods at (507) 529-4150.

Make a financial contribution – contributions are needed
Funds will be used to complete an inventory of 35,000 street side trees for a public database, create a proactive plan to manage Rochester’s urban forest, train volunteers to plant and advocate for the health of boulevard trees, purchase tree stock, and provide treatment for damaged or diseased trees.
