City sets new electric peak demand
record….again
ROCHESTER, MN. — The old electric peak
demand record just set back on July 17 of
276.5 MW (megawatts) didn’t last long
with a new record being set yesterday at 288
MW. Extremely high temperatures and high air
conditioning usage attributed to the new peak
demand.
Electrical peak demand is the greatest amount
of power used during a one-hour measured period.
Peak demand usually occurs between 1 P.M.
and 7 P.M. The new record was recorded between
5 and 6 P.M. where temperatures climbed into
the 90’s. Below are previous electric
peaks per year;

“The string of high temperature days
and high electricity usage is something that
we are always prepared for. There is a lot
of work that goes on behind the scenes in
order to make sure that there is reliable
power for RPU customers in these times of
high electricity usage. I am very pleased
with how our staff rose to meet the needs
of our customers,” said Larry Koshire,
General Manager.
