RPU line worker injured on the job is listed
in good condition
ROCHESTER, MN--- Steve Laugen, a 14 year line worker
for RPU, was burned on Wednesday afternoon while
working near a transformer in southeast Rochester.
Steve was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital and
then sent to Regions Hospital Burn Unit in St. Paul
for further medical attention. Norm Fast, a 22 year
line worker, was also on site at the time of the
accident, but did not require medical attention.
Initial findings show that Steve was burned by
“arc flash burns” on his arms, stomach,
and face. Both line workers involved were wearing
all necessary safety items including safety glasses,
flame retardant shirts, gloves for working around
electricity, hard hats, and vests.
Steve is currently listed in good condition at
Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
“Working around electricity is a very dangerous
job. Our line workers are highly-trained professionals,
but accidents can still happen. Steve and Norm are
two of the many dedicated RPU line workers that
work hard everyday to provide electricity to our
customers throughout the city of Rochester,”
said Larry Koshire, General Manager.
The incident is being investigated and reviewed
by the RPU Safety Committee and the Occupational
Safety & Health Administration was notified.
