Arbor Day Festivities To Be Held April 30
Public Invited To Celebrate "Trees Are Terrific In Cities And Towns"

Rochester, MN—As the weather warms and signs of spring appear, RPU and Maier Forest and Tree will celebrate Arbor Day 2004 on Friday, April 30 at Peace Plaza and Gage Elementary in Rochester.

The day’s festivities will begin at Peace Plaza in downtown Rochester. From 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Mayor Ardell Brede will speak, tree seedlings from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will be available free to the first 300 people, lunch of hotdogs and soda will be provided, the Paul Mayasich Trio will provide music, and Whiting's Nursery will give away 500 bare-root crab apple trees. Information on tree planting and city forestry will be on display.

At 2 p.m., the activity will move to Gage Elementary, where this year's tree planting ceremony will take place. Demarie Kapler, a fifth-grader at Gage, is the 2004 elementary poster contest winner. Kapler’s poster will be the logo for the 2005 Arbor Day celebration.

The Arbor Day celebration is sponsored by RPU and Maier Forest and Tree. Also participating in the celebration will be the DNR, Whiting's Nursery and Rochester Park and Recreation.

The scheduled rain date is May 7.

Partners in Planting, RPU's new offering to encourage tree planting for conservation, is sponsored by Maier Forest and Tree, Rochester Area Foundation, Committee for Urban Design and Environment, and Whiting's, Sargent's and Willow Creek Nurseries.
