ROCHESTER PUBLIC UTILITIES
RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE
WASHINGTON, D.C., April 17, 2007 – Rochester,
Minn., Public Utilities today earned the 2007 Award
of Continued Excellence from the American Public
Power Association’s (APPA) Demonstration of
Energy-Efficient Developments (DEED) program.
The award recognizes the utility’s long-term
commitment to energy innovation and its support
of research and development projects aimed at improving
efficiency and renewable resources for public power
systems. The award was presented during APPA’s
annual Engineering & Operations Technical Conference,
held in Atlanta, Ga.
“Since the creation of the DEED program, Rochester
Public Utilities has been a leader in efficiency
and environment-friendly innovation,” said
APPA President & CEO Alan H. Richardson. “Rochester’s
support for DEED, as well as its commitment to other
local and national programs is in the best interest
of today’s and tomorrow’s consumers.”
APPA is the Washington, D.C.-based service organization
representing the nation’s more than 2,000
not-for-profit, community-owned electric utilities.
The DEED program was created in 1980 and is the
only research and development effort funded nationally
by and for public power systems. It has funded more
than $6 million in energy projects since it was
created.
“Through DEED, RPU can help to promote the
progress of energy efficiency at a critical time
for our country,” stated RPU General Manager
Larry Koshire. “Our environmental, technological,
and educational programs aim to make Rochester a
better place to live, as well as to forward nationwide
efforts.”

RPU was a charter member of the DEED program in
1980. Over the years, it has received several DEED
grants and scholarships for projects such as:
• A study that quantified workplace concerns
regarding changes taking place in the U.S. electric
power industry;
• The Hybrid Energy Systems Study (HESS) aiming
to develop a better understanding of fuel cells,
explore their applications, and develop a digitally
controlled, hybrid residential energy system; and
• An analysis of the value of power reliability
from distributed generation.
RPU is also active in a variety of local, regional,
and national organizations that support energy research
and innovation. As a member of the Electric Power
Research Institute (EPRI), RPU is in the process
of finalizing a study on price-based demand response.
