Utilities hits new electric peak demand record
ROCHESTER, MN. — A combination of a
string of hot days, population growth, and
high air conditioning usage attributed to
Rochester Public Utilities (RPU) hitting a
new high for electric peak demand on July
18, 2006 at 276.5 MW (megawatts), breaking
the old record of 263 MW set on August 9,
2005.
Electrical peak demand is the greatest amount
of power used during a one-hour measured period.
Peak demand usually occurs between 1 P.M.
and 7 P.M. During times of high electric demand,
we take measures to help alleviate the spike
in demand at a certain point.
Through the RPU Partners program, we are
able to cycle business equipment, large industrial
equipment, and air conditioners that customers
allow to be cycled if needed. By cycling the
equipment for a 15 minute period, it helps
to reduce the demand during our highest peak
times. Also, by reducing the peak, there is
less strain on generating facilities, which
helps to save the environment and helps to
conserve natural resources.
During peak times, customers are asked to
make adjustments in their electricity consumption
if possible. Use major appliances before 10
A.M. and after 8 P.M., set air conditioning
at 78º F, and turn all unnecessary electric
items off during the day.

program or peak demand, visit www.rpu.org
