HBC and RPU Successfully Launch Broadband
over Power Lines Test
July 29, 2004
Much to the excitement of the customers involved,
Hiawatha Broadband Communications (HBC) of Winona
and RPU successfully "turned up" several
Internet connections in Southwest Rochester
using power lines late the week of July 12.
HBC and RPU have begun testing the broadband
internet technology in homes in Rochester. The
internet services are provided free to homes
during the four-month test period. RPU's electrical
wires have already proven able to carry high-speed
internet communications at speeds of over 1
MB. Faster speeds are anticipated in the future.
During the initial testing phase the technology
will be checked for radio frequency interference
and reliability.
Both HBC and RPU are monitoring the service
that customers are receiving and are learning
about this new sophisticated equipment.
There are now two commercial customers involved
in the test. One is planning to use the broadband
over power lines technology to provide internet
services to their customers using a wireless
connection.
